چکیده

• Transformation kinetics of several organic compounds photosensitized by DOM Enhanced transformation electron-rich at lower initial concentration Effect attributed to DOM-derived long-lived photooxidants (LLPO) Reduction potential LLPO estimated in the range 1.0 − 1.3 V vs. SHE Photochemically produced phenoxyl radicals mimic effect Dissolved matter (DOM) plays a crucial role photochemical contaminants natural aquatic systems. The present study focuses on characterization specific previously observed for phenols, consisting an acceleration DOM-photosensitized target low concentrations (< 1 µM). This was hypothesized be caused "long-lived" (LLPO). Pseudo-first-order rate constants anilines, sulfonamide antibiotics and phenylureas Suwannee River fulvic acid were determined under steady−state irradiation using UVA visible wavelengths from medium-pressure mercury lamp. A significant enhancement (by factor 2.4 16) first-order constant various 0.1 μM compared 5 . points relevant reactivity these with LLPO. For phenols anilines occurred only above certain standard one-electron oxidation potentials. From data series reduction versus hydrogen electrode. are proposed mainly consist formed photooxidation electron-poor phenolic moieties DOM. plausibility this hypothesis successfully tested studying 3,4-dimethoxyphenol aqueous solutions containing model photosensitizer (2-acetonaphthone) phenol (4-cyanophenol) as surrogates.

Enhanced Dissolved Organic Matter Recovery from Saltwater Samples with Electrodialysis

Complexities associated with dissolved organic matter (DOM) isolation from seawater have hampered compositional characterization of this key component of global carbon and nutrient cycles. DOM isolation efficiency by electrodialysis (ED) from saltcontaining waters was optimized and evaluated on samples including coastal ocean seawater, open ocean seawater, artificial seawater from axenic cultur...

Nature and transformation of dissolved organic matter in treatment wetlands.

This investigation into the occurrence, character, and transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in treatment wetlands in the western United States shows that (i) the nature of DOM in the source water has a major influence on transformations that occur during treatment, (ii) the climate factors have a secondary effect on transformations, (iii) the wetlands receiving treated wastewater ca...

Removal of natural organic matter from aqueous solutions by electrocoagulation

Natural organic matter (NOM) affects some qualitative parameters of water such as color. In addition, it can deteriorate the performance of water treatment process including coagulation, adsorption, and membranes. NOM also reacts with chlorine in the chlorination process and may form disinfection by-products. The present study was carried out in laboratory-scale in a batch system using a cylind...

Measuring the bioavailability of two hydrophobic organic compounds in the presence of dissolved organic matter.

Bioavailability of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and 3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (TCB) was studied in natural lake water containing dissolved organic matter (DOM). Lake water was diluted to give a dissolved organic carbon (DOC) range of 1 to 20 mg/L. Partition coefficients for the model compounds were assessed at different DOM concentrations and over time with three different methods, namely equilibri...
